The Grim Butterfly of Despair is the forty-sixth episode of Hanyō no Yashahime, and the twenty-second episode of the second season titled "The Second Act."

The episode opens with Inuyasha and Kagome riding Shippo and Towa, Setsuna, Moroha and Riku riding Takechiyo, all in pursuit of the Grim Butterfly. Seeing that the Grim Butterfly is about to attack Mamidaira Island, the group intervenes, saving Hachiemon, Kikunosuke, and the rest of the tanuki clan from being purified. Towa, Setsuna, Moroha and Riku then are allowed passage into the Grim Butterfly while Inuyasha and Kagome are denied entry; the two, Takechiyo and Hachi then decide to rally a group to quarantine the Grim Butterfly and forestall its rampage.
The group enters inside the Grim Butterfly's interior with Setsuna and Moroha proceeding to help Rion as Towa clashes with Osamu Kirin. As Riku was about to tell Towa on what Rion wants, Rion yells at him to shut up and he gets trapped into the spider webs dragging him all the way up to the ceiling. Outside the Tree of Ages, Kirinmaru states on how long he has waited for this as Sesshōmaru says how pitiful he is as their swords clash. Setsuna and Moroha are cutting down multiple colored threads of fate as Moroha asks Rion on what she wishes for which further enrages Rion with her yelling shut up and to stay out of her business as more rainbow color strings of fate drops in. Osamu uses the Zanseiken to drain Towa's demonic abilities as she is helpless against her former homeroom teacher and is on the verge of defeat as Osamu points the Zanseiken at her as he is about to dispatch her.

- The chant that Miroku uses to seal the Grim Butterfly is the same he used to seal Setsuna's demonic blood.
- This is the first time that the original group reunites before Moroha's birth.
- This is the first Kagome shoots three arrows at once.
- Sango and Miroku reunite with their oldest and closest, Inuyasha and Kagome Higrashi, friends after fourteen long years.
- When Towa's hair turns black due to her dog-demon abilities being drained by Zanseiken, it does not go down to her shoulders as it does during a new moon.
