It features Menōmaru, a demon from the continent whose father was sealed by Inuyasha's father, as the primary antagonist.

An additional title is The Love that Transcends Time.

Summary

Inuyasha's father defeated a powerful Mongol moth yōkai named Hyōga 200 years ago. Now, a Shikon Jewel fragment has freed Menōmaru, Hyōga's son. He seeks revenge for his father's destruction and to free the power of his father sealed away with him. Menōmaru resurrects his minions Ruri and Hari to plot against Inuyasha. They fought Sesshōmaru but they were no match for him, because he has Tenseiga, but Menōmaru orders them to find Inuyasha that he has Tessaiga.

In the modern era, Sōta gets grandpa that breakfast is ready as he is excited that the Sacred Tree's flowers have begun to bloom. After Kagome gets ready, she went to the wellhouse to go through the Bone-Eater's Well.

Inuyasha, Sango and Miroku soon find themselves battling a Scorpion demon. When Kirara enters the fray, she is scratched by the demon's claw and venom. Sango and Inuyasha combine forces to weaken the demon's exoskeleton. Miroku finishes the demon off with his Kazaana leaving only his severed head. Kagome neutralizes the Jaki surrounding the Shikon no Tama before picking up the piece.

Menōmaru smiles and orders Hari and Ruri to execute their plans.

The crew relax at a picnic prepared by Kagome. When Kirara runs off, Sango and Miroku investigate where she has gone. The duo soon have their hands full dealing with the Hari and Ruri who reveal they have lead them into a trap. When Miroku attempts to use his Kazaana (Wind Tunnel), Ruri moves in and copies his power. Hari having stolen Sango's faithful companion, Kirara, retreats with Ruri since the shot of an arrow by Kaede. They told Kaede that Hari and Rari are heading west toward the Forest of No Return. Meanwhile, Kikyō and her Shinidamachūs came to the Sacred Tree and it sensed its in danger and sees an yōkai moth that someone is after Inuyasha, as Kagome moves her bike that the bicycle's front tire is flat until she sees Kikyō, and feels the mark from 50 years ago and sensed Kagome and accidentally dropped her bicycle to disturbed Kikyō when she's hiding but Kikyō left. As Inuyasha find Kagome, he saw Kikyō's soul collectors, he knocked Myōga off, Shippō's father told him to respect elders not treating well fleas. She remembered the day that she and Inuyasha first met. Yōkai moths have came that have poison powder and Menōmaru have come to a fight as a test and he saw that he has Tessaiga, the "Fang of Destruction", but when Inuyasha must save Kagome in attempt to use his Iron Reaver Soul Stealer, Menōmaru blow the moths with mouth, and his visions getting blurry and Menōmaru stabs him. When he grabs the Tessaiga, it appears to be a barrier, he stab on his hair furious, so he has a plan to use Kagome and then kidnapped her. Myōga and Shippō are glad to see that Inuyasha has woke up that they finished bandaging his wounds. Myōga told him that he's the only son of Hyōga from the Asian continent, and tells the story of the Mongol invasion that the swirling demonic auras of both daiyōkai created a massive storm, Myōga tells Inuyasha where Menōmaru held Kagome is the Tree of Ages in the Forest of No Return. At the base of Tree of Ages, Kagome has been abducted, according to Menōmaru the Fang of Destruction has a barrier which means he can't inherit his father's legacy until the spell on the fang is broken, and the only way to accomplish that is the Tessaiga. Hari gets the taijitu from her forehead to put her under mind control, she was protected by spiritual powers. Menōmaru takes the shard of the Shikon Jewel and gives to Hari and merge to the taijitu to begin to put her under mind control, after that she woke up and broke the roots.

When Kagome is about to shoot the to turn Kirara back to normal, the moths have stopped her, until they were stopped by the Hiraikotsu as Sango and Miroku has arrived. They were going to fight as getting their friends back, and Kagome shot her arrow at Menōmaru, until Inuyasha has arrived. He used the Wind Scar on Menōmaru, but he's still immortal which means according to Myōga that he's absorbing demonic power from Hyōga, whose lies dormant behind him, that his body has been perished long ago, but his near limitless power remains sealed inside. Menōmaru is finally able to access the power of his predecessors, sealed away by Inuyasha's father, he becomes the new Hyōga and exponentially more powerful as each generation gains the power of all the preceding generations. Hyōga soon begins to change the essence of time and space as he's absorbing the souls of countless people in order to fully merge himself with his family's power. Except from the protection: Kaede's barrier in her entire village, Sesshōmaru protects Rin with his claws and Jaken use his Nintōjō to burn the moths, and he sensed that Hyōga has been "resurrected". This causes the mind control that he put on Kagome to awaken and he forces her to injure Kaede and search for Inuyasha. As he's crossing a bridge, Inuyasha thinks he sees Kikyō but instead it's Kagome who is wearing clothes similar to Kikyō's. Inuyasha greets her on the bridge while Kagome is trying to tell him to run, but unfortunately she cannot be heard. Kagome then walks over to Inuyasha and puts her head on his shoulder. He embraces her after which Kagome says "Inuyasha... get away," warning him of her attack. He looks in amazement but is then stabbed by magical "claws" that come from Kagome's hands; afterwards, he realizes that Menōmaru has put Kagome under a spell. He then is chased throughout the forest by the controlled Kagome to the tree that he was once sealed to. Regaining control of herself for a moment, Kagome insists for Inuyasha to run. After hearing that from everyone, Inuyasha gets angry and says that he's "sick of everyone telling him to run," when in danger and refuses to leave without her, surprising Kagome by the intensity of his voice when he refuses to leave without her. However, it is then that Kagome loses complete control of her body altogether and shoots Inuyasha, pinning him to the tree (similar to what happened between him and Kikyō fifty years earlier) sending Kagome into so much heartbreak and despair that she breaks free of her mind control and screams out in pain for Inuyasha and runs over to him, holding him in her arms sobbing. Kikyō then appears and says how ironic it was for that to happen again. Then she begins to tell Kagome that this happened because Kagome did not belong in the past in the Feudal Era and that she needs to take the Jewel Shards and return to her own time. Kikyō warned that Hyōga is using the formidable Tree of Ages in order to increase his demon powers. Then the Sacred Tree is also a Tree of Ages, that the Tree of Ages lives through different eras. Hyōga's Tree of Ages steals energy from various generations. Since that other generations of time have frozen over, Kikyō tells Kagome that her era has likely been plunged into a never-ending winter. As it happened in the modern era, the clouds came as grandpa felt so cold and shocked of the cherry blossoms on the sacred tree, as it's starting to snow. Back at the Feudal Era, Kagome felt surprised that the roots are forming, that the wood of Bone-Eater's Well is ancient as Kikyō tells her that the well was constructed out of wood from the Tree of Ages, it's vital life force lay dormant all these years, and is now being awakened by the Tree of Ages. Kikyō tells Kagome that if the well covered over, she'll never be able to pass through to her time, and must return to her world while she still have the chance, but Kagome refused as she directed to Inuyasha until Kikyō then forces Kagome down the Bone-Eater's Well to remove her once and for all from the past since through Menōmaru's manipulation of time, she thinks that Kagome will be forever trapped in the future, as Menōmaru felt surprised that Kagome broke his spell.

After returning to her own time, Kagome walks out to a snowy Tokyo. When she is walking towards the tree that Inuyasha was sealed to and where he sits now, she sees him there, unconscious due to her shooting him with an arrow while she was controlled by Menōmaru. As she walks towards him, a snow flake floats by and erases the image. It is then that she realizes that without a way back to Feudal Japan, that she can never see Inuyasha again and that she collapses and begins to cry.

Back in the Feudal Era, Miroku keeps fighting Ruri with the Wind Tunnel, until she tries to get his heart. Sango fights Hari while trying to get Kirara back from her control. Sesshōmaru appears, realizing that his father's ancient enemy is fighting with his half brother, but chooses not to interfere. For the first time in the series he has a conversation with Kikyō. Kikyō somehow knew he was Inuyasha's older brother, and Sesshōmaru knew about her relationship with Inuyasha as he told Jaken and Rin that she was nothing but a dead miko. He leaves warning her that only he will kill Inuyasha. Kaede, and Myōga rides on Shippō, that she saw Kagome's eyes red means that she's under the spell same as Kirara, until they the Bone-Eater's Well has covered up. Myōga has sensed Inuyasha's blood in the distance that it came from the Sacred Tree, and they were shocked to see Inuyasha unconscious.

Back in the modern era, her mother holds an umbrella above Kagome, and Sōta thinks that the tree is important, Ms. Higurashi said yes and it holds their memories, it remembers that Kagome was born, and Sōta, both of them started going to school, and he won first place in the school race, the times when he's sick in bed with a high fever. The tree lives through it all with them happy and sad times. Kagome was surprised that the shard of Shikon Jewel is glowing.

Ruri thought that she won, but the Wind Tunnel has gotten bigger and sucked herself so Miroku have won. Hari tell Kirara to finish Sango off, but she cry with her tears on the symbol on his forehead, as he hit to breaks her spell and he Sango reunited, until they defeated Hari. Sango has join with Miroku and he's glad that she got Kirara back. Kikyō and her soul collectors are going to lose the souls as Menōmaru takes few more souls left.

Once she gets back up, she heads over to the tree and places her hand on it. Kagome and Inuyasha are then connected to each other through the tree and begin to talk through their thoughts. He asks where she is and Kagome tells him that she is in her own time. He replies by saying, "Oh, did you get scared?" Angry at first, Kagome says that was not the reason, but then recalls her encounter with Kikyō and admits to being afraid. It is then that Kagome sees Inuyasha as if he were awake, and with her at that moment. She tells him that she feels helpless and since she hurt him that "maybe it's better if [she] wasn't around at all." With that Inuyasha stands up and tells her to stop saying such things. Kagome begins to tell him not to move because he will open his wounds, but Inuyasha walks over to Kagome and embraces her tightly to him (thus the name "Affections Touching Across Time") saying to her, "I need you with me Kagome.... Haven't you realized that yet?" Kagome then begins to cry again and lets her head fall into his shoulder saying, "Thank you... Inuyasha."

The scene cuts back to Kagome standing by herself, she then tries to go back to the well, but sees that it has roots coming out of it. She then runs back to the tree and touches it again and tells Inuyasha that she cannot get back (confusing her grandpa and brother who think she has lost it). Inuyasha then replies that she can use a sacred arrow. Kagome begins to say that she doesn't have any sacred arrows in the present day era, but then realizes where she can get one. She then gets a stick and bow from her grandfather and jabs the stick into the hole of the tree where she had injured herself earlier in the film and where Inuyasha was pinned to, pulling out a tip of an arrow. Before running back to the Bone-Eater's Well, her mother gives Kagome her school uniform telling her to "do what she had to do."

After changing clothes, Kagome shoots the arrow into the well just as a reawakened Inuyasha is determined to slash away the roots despite the protests of Kaede and Shippō due to his wounded condition. However, before he can do so, the blast from the arrow that Kagome shoots causes Inuyasha to get burnt and fall back into the rubble. Kagome emerges from the well and is happily welcomed back by Shippō and Kaede before getting into a fight with Inuyasha for the explosion who asks why she had to make "such a noisy entrance", verifying things are officially back to normal between them. Myōga then interrupts their fight and tells them that they have to defeat Menōmaru before it's too late.

Miroku and Sango join Inuyasha, Kagome, and Shippō in a stand against Menōmaru. However, he emerges from his cocoon as the new Lord Hyōga, a moth god with far more power than his father ever had, and out of his wings he summoned his armies of yōkai from the continent. Only with the power of Kagome's sacred arrow and Inuyasha's Backlash Wave attack do they manage to find a way to destroy Hyōga for good. Until then, the Tree of Ages is going to collapse, and Myōga felt impressive, they felt surprised that they were there the whole time.

During the credits, Sesshōmaru, Jaken, and Rin came to the Forest of No Return as they saw the debris of the Tree of Ages. The Shinidamachū is recovering Kikyō. The flower pedals in the feudal era falls from the Sacred Tree. Kagome, Inuyasha, Miroku, Sango, Shippō, and Hachi rebuilt the wall of the Bone-Eater's Well. Myōga and Kaede drinks tea. Shippō is giving Satsuki a flower. Kagome watches on her brother while her mother watches on grandpa and Buyo. While Kagome is sleeping in her studying, Inuyasha is watching her. Hōjō is giving Kagome some flowers. She, Eri, Ayumi, and Yuka going to Wacdnalds. Kagome, Shippō and Sango are at the hot springs.

After the credits end, Kagome and Inuyasha are sitting together in modern-day Tokyo by the Tree on either side talking about their conversation through their thoughts and the tree. Kagome then says that she wants to make everyone some more lunch and Inuyasha ends up insulting Kagome's cooking by saying that he only liked the pre-made stuff, causing her to make him sit.

Production Notes

Trivia

  • The movie stands far enough in the series that Rin is already with Sesshōmaru, and Inuyasha masters the Backlash Wave (so after episode 54) but not far enough for Kikyō to have lost her bitterness over her death, which cut her from the flow of time. Sesshōmaru also doesn't have Tōkijin, despite Inuyasha having mastered the Backlash Wave. (Likely an oversight)
  • Kyoko's Apron in Inuyasha.png
Kagome wears the apron with the Piyo Piyo symbol which comes from Rumiko Takahashi's second major work Maison Ikkoku used by protagonist Kyoko Otonashi , but in pink color.
  • Miroku sucks in several scorpions summoned by Hari during the movie, but doesn't suffer the effects of poison, even from the massive demonic scorpion from the beginning of the film.
  • The Sit! commands are shown to bury Inuyasha further in the ground depending on how intense Kagome's emotions are.
  • Hiraikotsu is shown to be much heavier than Sango makes it look, as Miroku lost his balance trying to pick it up.
  • The Sacred Tree is shown to be able to allow telepathic contact between eras.
  • Satsuki made a cameo in the end credits.

Goofs

  • There are two scenes where the ribbon on Kagome's uniform has the design we see in InuYasha The Final Act. The first one is after Inuyasha uses her handkerchief as bandage, the ribbon can be seen in the middle and also at the sides. The other scene is when they are fighting Menomaru in his father's grave, where there's also a shot in which we see the lines on the sides but the ribbon was left uncolored.
  • Inufall.jpg
When Kagome attacks Inuyasha at the bridge and it collapses, as Inuyasha falls his necklace's colors are inverted. The beads are white and the magatama are purple.
