Ryūjin's shield (竜人の盾, りゅうじんのたて, "Ryūjin no tate") was a weapon used by Ryūjin. Created with the help of Ryūjin's own scales, it is not only extremely resilient but also has the ability to drain demonic energy. It was destroyed when Inuyasha used the Bakuryūha.
Powers and abilities[]
- Demonic energy absorption: The shield has the ability to absorb huge amounts of demonic energy by merely touching the person or thing it wants to drain energy from. It can even absorb direct attacks of powerful demonic energy such as the Wind Scar with no damage whatsoever.
- Demonic energy redirection: The shield can redirect any energy it has absorbed back at the enemy whenever it pleases, as a powerful energy wave. However the shield needs to have absorbed a substantial amount of demonic energy to do it.
Trivia[]
- Japanese shields are rarely seen in pop culture properties, so there may be a notion that samurai did not use shields. They were typically square or rectangular rather than the small circular sheild that Ryūjin uses, though circular shields did indeed exist. Shields were typically used by infantry soliders to guard against attacks from archers and spearmen. The scroll Kiyomizudera Engi Emaki was painted in 1517 and depicts events from roughly 800 CE. The scroll shows how shields were used in combat.
