The Shrine Kannon (かんのんどう, "Kannondō") contained a scroll of the Buddhist deity Kannon. It was made from the skin of a salamander yōkai that had its essence sealed in it.

History[]

The women in the region prayed at temple to ask the god Kannon for guidance and comfort after their loved ones died in the wars, but because the painting of Kannon contained the spirit of a salamander yōkai, they soon became its slaves after it was awoken by Naraku's jaki. They started a village with the intention restoring the salamander with the skin of any man that would pass by.[1]

During the story[]

A samurai arrived at the village after being wounded in battle. He was tended to by the head of the village, Matsu, and several other women. They drugged him through his drink and carried him to the temple by Wakana. He awoke and found himself in front of a painting that was glowing. A giant head suddenly emerged from it and devoured the samurai's skin.[2]

Inuyasha's group arrived at the village with Shinosuke after hearing rumors of it being home to women that killed men and removed their skin. Shinosuke was there in the hopes of finding his fiancée Wakana (who was hiding in the shrine show he would not find her). After deciding to spend a night at the village, Miroku was taken to the shrine by a women that he was flirting with. He soon realized that she was possessed by a yōkai, and that painting in the shrine was the source.[2] He managed to escape the shrine after learning about the salamander's history, but saw that Shinosuke was approaching it with Wakana after she approached him. Miroku tried to warn Shinosuke of the yōkai, but it was prepared to attack him. At that moment, however, Wakana managed to free herself and save Shinosuke from the salamander's trap. Miroku tried to use his Kazaana against it, but was blocked by the woman that first accompanied him. This caused Miroku to use his staff against the yōkai, which forced it to flee and damaged the shrine doors while it escaped. He then used one of his sutras on the woman by punching her in the stomach with it and expel the salamander's offspring that possessed her.[1]
