Wakana (わか, "Young Green") is the fiancée of Shinosuke and was one of the women possessed by the salamander's egg which forced her to kill men and bring them to the salamander spirit who would take their flesh.

History[]

When Wakana and Shinosuke were engaged to be married, Shinosuke was conscripted to go to war. At some point, their village had been burned down and Wakana had joined a village of women that had also lost their loved ones to war. Wakana would then become possessed by a Salamander yōkai that was imprisoned in a painting that was placed in the shrine by the village that the women went to pray in. The women would abduct men that wondered into their village in order to kill them and use their skin to help revive it (one such victim included a wounded samurai).

During the story[]

Over two years after being conscripted, Shinosuke (who was accompanied by Inuyasha's group) arrived at the village while he was searching for Wakana. At first, Wakana hid herself from Shinosuke in order not to let herself be known to him, but would later approach while while he was sleeping in the village. Wakana then lured Shinosuke into the shrine in order for the salamander's spirit to kill him and take his flesh. Just as Shinosuke was about to be killed, however, Wakana briefly broke free from her control and pushed him out of the spirit's path. Just then Miroku arrived and managed to free Wakana's mind by punching her in the stomach with his sacred sutra and expelling the egg that the salamander was using to control all the women in the village.

After the salamander was killed and all of the women were freed from its control, Wakana and Shinosuke said their goodbyes to Inuyasha and his companions (except Miroku and Sango) before returning to their homeland.
